What is the Agile Methodology? And what does it mean to develop in an agile way? Agile is a set of values and principles that can help your team write software more efficiently. It’s less of a manifesto, as it’s sometimes referred to, and more of a collection of beliefs that teams can use to make the best decisions about how to do the work of developing software.

The Agile methodology values individuals and interactions over process and tools. This belief is listed as the first of 4 epic Agile Values which serve as benchmarks for its 12principles which we also explain here. Because this first value is about giving your team the ability to make good decisions, let’s have a closer look at why it’s considered a foundational stage.

Individuals and Interactions

At the core of this principle is the belief that people deliver solutions. It doesn’t overshadow the importance of process and tools, but emphasizes that the best projects revolve around motivated individuals on your team. You provide them with the environment and support they need and then trust them to get the job done because your experience with Agile has proven that the best architectures, requirements and designs emerge from self-organizing team. This principle also insists on the benefits of your team working with clients on a daily basis throughout a project, with face to face conversations being the preferred method of conveying information. Following the Agile, your team is open to change and is frequently reflecting on how to become more effective and how that may mean adjusting their practices throughout the lifecycle of a practice.
